Town manager hopes to wash away fears about beach showers

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The idea of adding showers at the end of two beach accesses in the Town of Topsail Beach has some people getting heated.

The project would only cost between $1,000 and $2,500 and would be funded through the town's occupancy tax. They would be added to the Crews and Davis beach accesses.

Some residents say the addition of showers could either offer convenience or cause big problems.

The showers would give visitors the opportunity to rinse off after a trip to the beach without having to find a private home or hotel. Residents living next to the potential accesses, however, have told town leaders they are worried about an uptick in foot traffic.

Some residents are also concerned the showers will look like bath houses and question what type of people may hang out there at night.

Town Manager Tim Holloman, however, said they would be a "shower tower" not a bath house.

Pender Co. will officially stick with the traditional school calendar

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It is finally official – the traditional school calendar will remain in place in Pender County.

School board members voted during a recent meeting to keep the traditional school calendar.

There has been controversy surrounding the topic for the past few month, as Pender County Schools had toyed with the idea of starting high schools week earlier than middle or elementary schools.

Many parents and town leaders were upset with the concept saying it would make it more difficult for students to get summer jobs.

The College Career Promise Program was the reason behind the potential change. School board members and the superintendent were able to find a way to make the program work without changing the regular schedule.
