New scam based on fake traffic accident situation | 911

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Town of Surf City is warning residents about a potential phone scam in the area.

A resident told police he received a phone call informing him his mother had been in a car accident.

The caller then threatened the victim saying he would kill the victim’s mother if he was not sent money. Luckily the victim had just talked to his mother and knew she was fine.

Police are warning people to be careful. If you receive this type of call, immediately locate the family member that is said to have been involved in an accident.

According to police, the caller had a 787 area code, which traces back to Puerto Rico.
