PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Two kids in Pender County are taking a break from video games and dolls, and giving back. Dylan Minor, 7, and his sister Emma, 5, are raising money for people in Boston.

Surf City offering T-ball, instructional baseball for kids

SURF CITY, NC (WECT) – T-ball and instructional baseball will be offered in Surf City soon, according to Surf City Parks & Recreation Athletics Supervisor Steve Unger, and coaches for both are still needed.

Practices for the sports begin May 21 at the Surf City Community Center Athletic Fields, while games are scheduled for the first week of June. Games will end with a celebration on July 2.

T-ball is for children from 4 to 7 years old, and practices and games will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays with Fridays as backup in case of inclement weather.

South Topsail hosts Thorpe Science Night Friday

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – South Topsail Elementary will hold Thorpe Science Night Friday as they participate with the North Carolina Science Festival.

Schools across the state applied to participate in this festival.

Vendors from the community are included in South Topsail’s science night activities.

The event will take place at the school Friday night, 5:30-7:30.

South Topsail Elementary to host Relay for Life activities

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – South Topsail Elementary will have a day of activities Friday focused around Relay for Life.

The school will present a check to the American Cancer Society around 1:20 p.m. in the multi-purpose room.

According to school officials, students will take part in a “Relay Recess” throughout the day where they will participate in stations to learn about health and wellness.

Topsail's EV team wins again

Topsail's EV team wins again

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Topsail High School Electric Vehicle team won first place overall for the 10th consecutive year in the EV Challenge last weekend.

According to the school, EV Challenge is an annual competition between schools nationwide who convert conventional automobiles to operate solely on electric power.

Topsail High School’s team entered two vehicles in this year’s competition – a 1991 Toyota MR2 and a 2001 Ford Ranger Edge.

The car finished first place overall, and the truck won second place overall.

The students involved in the Topsail EV Team spend countless hours fundraising for, designing, and educating the public about electric vehicles.

Pender County hosting Spring Festival soon

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Pender County will be hosting its Spring Festival soon, according to an event organizer.

The event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. May 3 at the Pender County Courthouse Square.

Friday night, festivities will kick off with a street dance, and on Saturday, there will be a festival with Pender County vendors.

Principal at S. Topsail Elem. named Principal of the Year

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The principal at South Topsail Elementary School was named NCAE Principal of the Year, according to a spokesperson for the school district.

AnnaMaria Romero-Lehrer will be recognized during a ceremony at the school Wednesday, April 3.

The award is given by the Principals/Administrators Division of the North Carolina Association of Educators.
