Movie in the park: 'The Patriot'

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you’re looking for something unique to do this weekend, consider heading to Moores Creek National Battlefield for a free movie in the park.

In celebration of Memorial Day, Moores Creek National Battlefield will be playing The Patriot on the park’s 16’x25’ outdoor screen.

Bring your favorite movie snack, your best chair and some blankets to snuggle-up as you watch Mel Gibson in this historic film.  There will be grills available on a first-come, first- serve basis.

The event will begin at 8:00 p.m. with a presentation by the park’s historian and the film will start shortly after 8:30 p.m., once it’s dark enough to see the screen.

The movie is Rated “R” for “strong war violence.”

Topsail Beach turns 50; celebration begins

TOPSAIL BEACH, NC - (WECT) - The Town of Topsail Beach is turning 50, and to celebrate, a kick-off celebration is taking place Tuesday night at the Assembly Building.

The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. It will cost $5 to attend.

The kick-off dinner is just the begining of festivities that will be taking place to celebrate Topsail Beach's 50th year.

Local contestant from 'The Voice, Season 2' prepares to launch album

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Katrina Parker from Season 2 of The Voice joins us in a Google Plus Hangout.

Katrina Parker is from Holly Ridge, but has spent the last few years in California trying to reach her dreams as a singer.

We sat down with her for a Google Plus Hangout that we also streamed LIVE over YouTube.  She talked about her Kickstarter Campaign to try to raise money for her first album.  She's trying to raise nearly $20,000 to produce her first album since the show.

As of Tuesday evening, she needed to raise $5,000 with three days left.

Topsail teacher appears on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show;' wins trip to Australia

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A local teacher at Topsail Elementary made an appearance on Thursday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Cherilyn McGraw is from Hampstead, and now, she's heading to Australia after winning the "Stuff Your Down Under Pants" game show.

In order to win, McGraw and the woman she competed against for the trip both strove to place the most plastic balls into bags in a given time limit.

Business picks up for Down East Connect

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Business is up, according to farmers with Down East Connect in Columbus County. They say most orders coming in this week are more than $40.

Down East Connect has organic free range turkeys this year from Worley’s Family Farms. According to Chandler Worley, many farmers don’t grow organic free range turkeys because they’re too expensive.

Worley said customers can buy the turkeys throughout the holidays via downeastconnect.com.

There are nine drop off locations for Down East Connect in New Hanover County, Hampstead, Leland and Whiteville.

Weekend festival scheduled

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Autumn with Topsail Art, Food and Beach Musical Festival will take place Saturday and Sunday, according to a news release.

The event, sponsored by the Historical Society of Topsail Island, will include food and drinks, children’s activities, live music and more. The event will also include a juried Artists Court with the works of 100 regional artists and craftsmen on display and for sale.

The festival will take place at the festival grounds in front of the Museum in Topsail Beach on South Topsail Island.

Free outdoor program for youth this weekend

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Law Enforcement Officers Association is hosting a free youth outdoors day for Pender, Brunswick and New Hanover counties.

According to a flyer, youth ages 8-16 are invited to take part in a day of fishing, marksmanship, archery, displays of bomb disposals and more.

The goal is to allow all participants an opportunity to experience outdoor activities in a safe and educational way.

Each participant must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

The Youth Outdoors Day will take place Sunday, October 14, 1-5 p.m. at 5301 Holly Shelter Road. Contact Dan Higgins for more information (910) 279-0956.
