News Release from OWSA:

Based on the laboratory analysis of water samples collected from Onslow Water and Sewer Authority on Monday, May 6, 2013, water users affected are hereby notified that it is no longer necessary to boil water used for human consumption. The system has resumed normal operations.

This precautionary advisory was issued to consumers on North Topsail Island from Chestnut Street to the Onslow County side of Surf City due to emergency repairs on the waterline at the intersection of Island Drive and Chestnut Street on Monday, May 6, 2013.

System pressure advisory for some ONWASA customers

News Release from ONWASA:

The water consumers of ONWASA in Onslow County may experience periods of low pressure and outages in the distribution system due to ONWASA crews making emergency repairs to a watermain at the intersection of Island Drive and Chestnut Street on Monday, May 06, 2013. Those who are affected are consumers on North Topsail Island from Chestnut Street to the Onslow County side of Surf City. Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increases the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system.

South Topsail Elementary to host Relay for Life activities

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – South Topsail Elementary will have a day of activities Friday focused around Relay for Life.

The school will present a check to the American Cancer Society around 1:20 p.m. in the multi-purpose room.

According to school officials, students will take part in a “Relay Recess” throughout the day where they will participate in stations to learn about health and wellness.

Surf City Volunteer Fire Dept fights for local girl

SURF CITY, NC - (WECT) - At 17-months-old, Mia Rose, was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma cancer. It began in the adrenal glands above her left kidney and spread to her skull and spine.

Now, the Surf City Volunteer Fire Department, is doing what they can to help out her and her family with their large number of medical costs.

They will be holding several events on April 27th including a Bar-b-que/yard sale and Benefit Poker Run.

Get fit with Topsail Beach

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Leaders in Topsail Beach are helping people get fit.

Topsail Beach will host its weekly exercise day Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. inside the Assembly Building.

The program is open for all levels of physical activities. Participants are asked to bring an exercise mat, if they have one.

Woman rescued from house fire released from hospital

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A woman who was pulled from a burning trailer earlier this month has been released from the hospital.

According to Chief Lanier with the Hampstead Fire Department, firefighters rescued Judy Hinnant from her burning trailer on Lea Drive Feb. 1.

A firefighter found Hinnant unresponsive on a bed, so he broke a window to get in and carried her out the window to safety.

Hinnant was transported to Chapel Hill to be treated for severe smoke inhalation. According to Lanier, she has since been released and is doing well.

Lanier said Hinnant went to the fire station Monday night to thank the firefighters for rescuing her from the burning home.
