Commissioners approve new exotic animal policy

Commissioners approve new exotic animal policy

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Commissioners in Pender County approved a plan to add new rules in regards to owning dangerous wild animals in the county.

They decided to add an “inherently dangerous wild animal” section to the current animal control ordinance.

It states that it’s against the law for anyone to own a dangerous wild animal, with the exception of being part of a zoo, fair or other temporary event.

Animals already kept in the county will be grandfathered in, but must be registered within 90 days.

Pender Co. passes April Animal Shelter Inspection

The Pender County Animal Shelter passed their April Inspection. The inspection took place on Friday.

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Pender County Animal Shelter passed their April Inspection. The inspection took place on Friday.

The Burgaw shelter failed their March Inspection for various reasons, including holes in the indoor K9 kennels. The animal shelter passed a follow-up inspection two weeks later, but the holes, while fixed, were still a concern.

Friday, the inspection report stated the holes were no longer an issue:

The holes in the metal walls of the kennels have been patched with a bondo material  that is hard / impervious to moisture and at this time is holding up under  cleaning and contact with the dogs.  Near future plans are to replace all the indoor k-9 kennels.

The inspection also stated that the outdoor storage area had been reorganized and that "much improvement" was noted.

Pender Animal Shelter moves under Health Dept.'s control

The Pender County Animal Shelter will soon be under the control of the Pender County Health Department.

PENDER COUNTY, NC - (WECT) - The Pender County Animal Shelter will soon be under the control of the Pender County Health Department.  County Manger, Mickey Duvall, took over the shelter from the Pender County Sheriff's Office earlier this year.

He says he was never supposed to have permanent control of the shelter, he was just supposed to impose some policy.

Duvall says with his own duties in creating the budget it's hard to give the shelter the time it needs.  He says he created policies and procedures for the shelter, an inventory system, and created the Animal Advisory Board, now he says it's time to hand it over.

"I think it would have been hard for me in a county managers role, and I think the board saw that, to have been out there on a daily basis, and to respond to all of the e-mails we get," said Duvall.

Commissioners continues talks about animal shelter in Pender Co.

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Pender County Commissioners will discuss two items at their meeting Monday afternoon that deal with the Pender County Animal Shelter.

The shelter has been in the news recently, after failing an inspection report allegations of possible criminal behavior came to late at a recent Commissioner meeting.

The State Bureau of Investigation said they are now looking into the matter to see if any laws were broken.

Commissioners will decide if they should spend over $20,000 to equip the shelter with security cameras and a door access control system. Currently, there is no security in place and County Manager Mickey Duval hopes the addition of these features can help cut down with the problems.
