Topsail leaders decided to delay decision on pay parking

TOPSAIL, NC (WECT) – The Town of Topsail has decided to hold a public hearing before making a decision on whether they will switch to pay parking.

The town manager says the hearing will take place later this summer.

The town has been considering several options, which include metered parking of having people purchase daily or annual passes.

House moving could cause delays in Topsail

TOPSAIL BEACH, NC - (WECT) - Topsail Beach officials are warning people to be aware of potential delays on Topsail Island early Wednesday morning.

Officials say a house moving will take place and delays could occur from 9am until noon.

Officials say the house will be moved from 1612 Carolina Blvd to 1311 North New River Drive in Surf City. Delays should be expected on South and North Anderson.

Commissioners approve new exotic animal policy

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Commissioners in Pender County approved a plan to add new rules in regards to owning dangerous wild animals in the county.

They decided to add an “inherently dangerous wild animal” section to the current animal control ordinance.

It states that it’s against the law for anyone to own a dangerous wild animal, with the exception of being part of a zoo, fair or other temporary event.

Animals already kept in the county will be grandfathered in, but must be registered within 90 days.

Volunteers gather data about homelessness in Pender Co.

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Trained volunteers will take a snapshot of areas experiencing homelessness in our community over a 24-hour period to gather various data elements.

The annual Point-In-Time is sponsored by the North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness, which compiles data across the state.

The count is a piece of unduplicated demographic information in which staff and volunteers gather data including gender, race, cause of homelessness and where people are sleeping.

The data collection will take place Wednesday in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties. The results will be calculated and analyzed in February and released to the public via www.wilmingtonhousing.org.

The kick off for the trained volunteers will begin at 5 p.m.

Commissioners approve park project

Commissioners approve park project

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Commissioners in Topsail Beach voted 4-1 Wednesday night to approve building a park in the area.

There was some debate regarding whether the park should be built, with those opposed to the idea saying it isn’t worth the money. Those for the park say it will give visitors more to do when the weather cools down.

Since the board voted in favor of the park, commissioners will now finalize the land purchase and start the design process.

Debris continues to wash ashore

Debris continues to wash ashore

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Debris continues to wash in onto the beach from Hurricane Sandy, according to the Town of Surf City’s Facebook page.

They posted a picture of a log that’s 8-10’ tall on their Facebook page earlier this week.

The Town of Surf City will pick up yard debris starting December 17.

All debris must be put out the night before and can’t be more than 4’ long and 6” in diameter. The town will only pickup yard debris like clippings and tree limbs.

Register to take part in the 2012 Christmas Parade

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you’ve ever wanted to take part in a parade, now’s your chance. The Burgaw Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for groups to participate in the 2012 Christmas Parade.

The parade will take place Saturday, December 8 at 6:30 p.m. Registration to participate is due a week before, December 1.

Parade organizers are looking for everything from pageant queens and bands to homemade floats or marching in line.
