Property to be annexed into Surf City

SURF CITY, NC (WECT) - Surf City is growing.

During Tuesday's Surf City Town Council meeting, counselors finalized plans to allow for a satellite annexation and zoning of a property located on Mill Creek Road.

That means the 22.53 acre property can become part of the town, even though it does not sit within town lines. The property is owned by Summer Ducks LLC.

Surf City boutique opens doors, more shops to follow

SURF CITY, NC (WECT) - Bellavie, a womens boutique, opened its doors in Surf City at the end of last week, and the town's planning director says more shops are to follow.

Todd Rademacher, says there are plans to build a Fuzzy Peach, Dunkin' Doughtnuts, Baskin-Robbins and Subway are are scheduled to be built in that shopping center.

He says this is only phase one of the project, so more businesses will be coming to the area in the next couple of years.

Taxable sales, number of building permits up in Pender County

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The amount of taxable sales and the number of building permits issued have increased in Pender County

County Manager Mikey Duvall reported that the total taxable sales increased by $22,766,749 in the fiscal year ending on 6/30/12 compared to the fiscal year ending on 6/30/11. That is an increase of 8.6 percent.

There were also 371 building permits issued from January 2012 through July 2012, compared to 330 in 2011. That is an increase of 12.4 percent.

Surf City residents will see tax increase

SURF CITY,NC(WECT)- For the first time in a long time, residents in Surf City are about to pay more in property taxes.

Town leaders haven't voted in an increase like this in more than ten years. The town manager suggested that getting to revenue neutral the town must raise rates to 33 cents for every $100 of property value. However, officials agreed not to go that high and set the rate at 31 cents.

Mayor Zander Guy said he hopes to get the rate lower by next year.

Town of Topsail to consider new easements

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Town of Topsail Beach town board is considering sending a new round of easements to 400 oceanfront residents

They would be a part of the 30-year beach management plan and the FEMA plan that would replenish sand lost during Hurricane Irene.

Topsail has already seen easements but Town Manager Tim Holloman said they were temporary. He also said although the majority of residents do not mind easements, there are some who have concerns over allowing the state permanent access to their property.

Rebuilding the Hampstead Medical Center

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WECT) - Eckhardt Construction is rebuilding the Hampstead Medical Center along Highway 17.

The original building burned down on the fourth of July two years ago. Dr. Shyam Garg was the main occupant for 25 years until the building was destroyed. He will be serving the Hapstead community again when the building is complete in October.
