Surf City offering T-ball, instructional baseball for kids

SURF CITY, NC (WECT) – T-ball and instructional baseball will be offered in Surf City soon, according to Surf City Parks & Recreation Athletics Supervisor Steve Unger, and coaches for both are still needed.

Practices for the sports begin May 21 at the Surf City Community Center Athletic Fields, while games are scheduled for the first week of June. Games will end with a celebration on July 2.

T-ball is for children from 4 to 7 years old, and practices and games will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays with Fridays as backup in case of inclement weather.

Pender Co. coaches meet former NFL player, coach

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Two Pender County coaches recently got to meet a famous face of the NFL.

Topsail High School’s Coach Bryan Davis and Heide Trask High School’s Glenn Sellers met Tony Dungy, an NFL Super Bowl champion, television analyst, author, and parenting/coaching advisor, according to the Pender County Schools website.

The coaches met Dungy at the Carson-Newman football clinic, which helps encourage coaches and their wives to provide a positive environment to young people by modeling good marriages.

Relay For Life of Pender County to host 'Swing For A Cure' event

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WECT) - The Relay for life team at United Methodist Church of Hampstead is hosting a “Swing for a Cure” event on Friday, April 26.

“Swing for a Cure” is a Golf Tournament benefiting Relay for Life of Pender County. This event starts at 12:30 at the Olde Point Golf & Country Club in Hampstead.

Surf City now offering indoor Spin classes

SURF CITY, NC (WECT) – Surf City Community Center offers a variety of workout classes, and Spinning is now one of them.

The town’s Parks and Recreation department recently purchased Spin bikes, according to Athletics Supervisor Steve Unger, and the department will be teaming up with Mad Dogg Athletics, Inc. so that the center will become a certified Spinning facility.

The cost for any cycle class is $5 for community center members, and visitors will also pay an additional $5 fee. Bikes are limited, so participants are encouraged to sign up ahead of classes they’d like to attend each week.

SURF CITY, NC (WECT) – A six-week volleyball program for kids will be starting soon in Surf City.

According to Steve Unger with Surf City Parks & Recreation, Surf City Youth Volleyball is a training course for players ages 9-14. It’s especially meant for players who will be trying out for their school teams.

Zumbathon to benefit American Heart Association

Zumbathon to benefit American Heart Association

SNEADS FERRY, NC (WECT) – A Zumbathon will be held soon in Sneads Ferry to benefit the American Heart Association.

According to a news release, the event will take place Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Forever Fit Fitness Center from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $8 in advance, or $10 at the door.
