Squirrel causes power outage in Hampstead

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - About 6,000 people in the Hampstead area were without power this morning. The cause, a squirrel.

According to Progress Energy, around 8 a.m. a squirrel got in an electrical substation and was electrocuted while running over the equipment. The substation automatically shuts down to avoid further damage to equipment.

Progress Energy was able to reestablish power within the hour.

Brown tap water: Hampstead woman looks for help

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A woman in Hampstead is having problems with her tap water being brown.  She reached out to her water company, who said the water isn't harmful, but she says the problem is getting worse.

Tammie Moore said her water has never been clear since she and her husband moved into their home six years ago.  The water appears clear as it first pours from the faucet, but as it collects in the bottom of a bathtub it darkens.

Gator decides to make Surf City its new home

SURF CITY, NC (WECT) — An alligator has decided that a man-made pond off of Roland Avenue and Hwy. 50 in Surf City is a good place to call home.

A lot of construction has been going on in the area, which is now home to a new McDonalds and the future Surf City Promenade. The gator has been spotted by many residents on the side of the road as well as lounging in the sun by the pond.

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Michael Mack, the Pender County Director of Waste Management, confirmed to WECT.com that the Scotchman on Hwy. 53 in Pender County near Maple Hill is the oldest scotchman in the world.
