PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The company which memorialized a sea turtle named Dare in a reef ball is returning to the Topsail Island/Wrightsville Beach area for the first time since 2006.
According to a press release, Elizabeth “Betsy” Kautz who cared for Dare at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center will be memorialized in an Eternal Reef and find her final rest on Dare’s Reef. Betsy lost a long battle with cancer earlier this year.
Betsy will be memorialized in April when her cremated remains will be mixed with environmentally safe concrete to form a reef ball that will be lowered to the ocean floor.
Reef balls are huge, hollow structures that look like giant waffle balls, according to the press release. They attract aquatic wildlife and foster new marine growth.
Betsy was well known for her work at the hospital and with the beach monitoring programs as well.
